Owen Farrell will miss the start of England’s World Cup campaign after belatedly receiving a ban for his high tackle on Wales back-rower Taine Basham earlier this month.
The national captain appeared at an appeal hearing, via video link, in front of an independent judicial panel comprising chair Nigel Hampton KC (New Zealand), along with Shao-ing Wang from Singapore and Donal Courtney from Ireland.
Farrell’s hearing began at 7.30am and some 13 hours later, there was an announcement from the Six Nations – who oversee the process in this case – that the 31-year-old has been suspended for four matches, having originally avoided a sanction.
The panel reached a guilty verdict and opted to impose the ‘mid-range’ suspension, with a reduction of two weeks for acceptance of foul play, remorse and good character.
It was agreed that the ban would include the warm-up fixture against Ireland in Dublin last weekend.

A disciplinary panel rescinded the red card in a verdict that sent shockwaves through the sport
Basham failed a head injury assessment though no symptoms of concussion were subsequently found by the Wales doctors
England head coach Steve Borthwick didn’t pick him for that showdown with the world’s No 1-ranked side, but emphasised that – without the disrupted build-up – he would have been involved.
